Novi Grad, along with Novo Sarajevo, is a product of the city's massive growth and development in the 1960s and 1970s.
The communist architecture of the concrete blocks of flats dominate the skyline. The neighbourhood is divided by the 40-meter wide Zmaja od Bosne avenue, a 6-lane road that takes the traffic from the suburbs of Ilidza into the valley of the Miljacka river towards the old part of the town.
